By the end of May 1945, more enemy prisoners were sitting out the Second World War in Texas than any state in the Union. One out of every ten German, Italian and Japanese captives shipped to the United States for safekeeping wound up somewhere between the Red River and the Rio Grande.
Applications are being accepted for the Christine Holcombe Memorial Scholarship. Applicants must have completed at least one year of college, must be a former Milam county resident and have graduated from a Milam county high school. Applications are due by June 30, 2025.
Since 2005, the Callaway Foundation has awarded millions of dollars in scholarships to over a thousand C.H. Yoe High School graduates—opening doors to careers in medicine, engineering, business, and skilled trades. Now, as the Foundation marks its 20th anniversary, it continues to fulfill the vision of its founders: helping local students pursue higher education and build brighter futures.

The Scholarship program was Tuesday, May 20 and we gave out 6 $500 scholarships and 1 $1,000 scholarship. I’ll list them in the near future. Seniors, we sure need your mailing addresses. You can message me, e-mail me or phone me. FYI: Homecoming is October 4 at the Fireman’s Hall. If we don’t have your mailing address you won’t get an invitation. That doesn’t mean you can’t come, but it gives you all the information you need. You also won’t get class reunion notices and you sure don’t want to miss those get togethers. We also need a little extra help at Homecoming this year. A couple of our regular helpers won’t be around that day, so if you have time and would like to help out, please contact me.
