El Camino Real and Milam County Historical Commission Bring History to Life for Cameron 4th Graders
As part of Texas Archeology month in Milam County, El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail Association (ElCaT) and the Milam County Historical Commission presented a lesson on Early Archeology and Frontiersman Life to Cameron’s 4 th Grade students on Friday, October 10. The group is available to present throughout the year.
State Fair Plant ID and Ag ID Results
Milam County 4-H members made their county proud at the State Fair of Texas as both the Senior Plant ID and Senior Ag ID teams earned 5th place finishes in statewide competition. The Senior Plant ID Team-consisting of Aaron Ponnaiya, Luke Holcombe, Winston Walzel, and Anna Kroeger-demonstrated strong knowledge and skill, securing 5th place overall. Their success was made possible through the guidance and dedication of coach Irby, whose support has been instrumental to the team's achievements. The Senior Ag ID Team also captured a 5th place finish. Team members Caleb Fuchs, Maddie Ba-sonic, Luke Holcombe, and Noah Bradley represented Milam County with determination and hard work, earning recognition among some of the top competitors in the state. The spotlight also shone on the Junior Ag ID Team, made up of Sophia Fuchs, Abbie Basonic, Mackenzie Holcombe, and James Holcombe. While not placing this year, the team impressed with their knowledge, effort, and strong representation of Milam County 4-H. Milam County 4-H leaders expressed pride in all the youth who competed, noting that their achievements highlight the dedication, teamwork, and leadership skills that are hallmarks of the 4-H program. "Congratulations to each of our teams for an outstanding job at the State Fair," organizers said. "Your commitment, preparation, and sportsmanship truly reflect the best of Milam County 4-H." Banned Books Week Takes Place this Week
Banned Books Week takes place October 5-11. The annual event raises awareness of the harm and the rising trend of book challenges and bans. This year’s theme is “Censorship Is So 1984: Read for Your Rights” The theme is inspired by George Orwell’s “1984”, a dystopian novel that tells the story of a man trying to break away from his society’s oppressive regime. Though the novel is set in 1984 (the book was published in 1949), freedom advocates argue that the increase of banned books today is similar to the censorship displayed in Orwell’s work. Banned Books Week is a movement that celebrates the freedom to read, while drawing attention to censorship of literature in libraries, schools and bookstores.
