Milam County girls dominate 25-2A list

Milam County players dominated the District 25-2A girls all-district lists released this week. Thorndale senior Elise Biar and junior Madison Smith were named the league’s co-MVPs. Milano senior Sterling Robertson was named defensive MVP. Other top awards went to Hearne sophomore Jenny Johnson as Offensive MVP, Mumford freshman Hailey James as Newcomer of the Year and fellow Mumford freshman Alexis Hernandez as the “Sixth Man”, best nonstarter player. Thorndale’s Jordyn Smith, Savana Taylor and Sierra Winkler joined Milano’s Hannah Batten earning first team all-district honors. Other first team honors went to Natalie Carroll and Destinee Davis of Hearne; Jo Carter and Faith Stroud of Holland; Brooklyn Wager of Mumford; and Addison Leschber of Thrall. Milano’s Faith Walton, along with Landry Laywell and Ashley Pesl of Thorndale were named to the second team. Other second team selections were Faith Scruggs and MiKayla Skrhak of Granger; Wyneshia Jackson and Chelsi Woods of Hearne; Raeanna Riley of Holland; and Shelby Grisham and Chandra Reed of Thrall. Local players earning honorable mention included Milano’s Kristian Taylor and McKenna Robertson and Thorndale’s Kiera Rash and Kelsey Kovar. There were also several Milam County players who earned a spot on the Academic All-District list. The requirement was that they maintained a 90 and above average. Those players from Milano to qualify were: Ashlyn Johnson, Abby Miller, Hannah Batten, Sterling Robertson and Karyme Santana. Players from Thorndale earning academic all-district were: Landry Laywell, Kelsey Kovar, Elise Biar, Ashley Pesl, Savana Taylor, Madison Smith, Kiera Rash, Ariana Anders, Jordyn Smith, Sierra Winkler and Makayla Lafferty.
