False Facebook Post Misleads Readers, Reporter on The Herald’s Future

A social media message posted on April 9th by a laid-off former employee of The Cameron Herald unfortunately misled our readers about Times Media Group’s plans for this newspaper.

The post – which purported to be written by the Herald’s staff – falsely announced that the paper had “transitioned to a new operational structure, resulting in the release of the entire local staff at the Cameron Herald." The false post – placed online by a former employee with access to the Herald’s Facebook page – also led to the Houston Chronicle wrongly reporting that the Herald “just lost its entire newsroom.”

Publisher Steve Strickbine, the founder of Times Media Group, which bought the Herald and 31 other local Texas newspapers from Moser Community Media in February, called the post “an unfortunate situation” set off by an employee who had worked at the paper for about three weeks before the TMG purchase was complete on March 2, 2026.

“On Thursday, we laid off two employees,” said Strickbine. “We also announced that we’re moving offices, from the building where the Herald had been housed into a space in the Chamber of Commerce building. Unfortunately, one of the people we laid off decided to use their access to our social media to post some things that simply aren’t true.”

Strickbine said that the paper will continue to have a local presence, including employees working in Cameron to make sure local readers and advertisers enjoy the strong presence the paper has had since it was founded in 1860.

“Let me be as clear as I can be,” Strickbine said. “We are going to cover Cameron in more depth than before, tell more important stories than we did previously, and better connect our advertisers to the community. I meant what I said on the day this purchase closed: At Times Media Group, we invest in local news because informed citizens build stronger towns, stronger economies and stronger families.”
