Yoemen topple Orangefield in Area

The Cameron Yoemen advanced to the Regional round of the football playoffs on Friday night with a big win over Orangefield.

The Yoemen traveled to Alvin to take on the Orangefield Bobcats in the Area round of the playoffs. Cameron had a strong performance, winning 42-19.

Cameron kicked off to begin the game. The defense started strong and forced a three and out. The Yormen offense would take possession and face a fourth-and-2. Cameron went for the conversion, and came up short. The Yoemen returned on defense and produced another three and out for the Bobcats. Cameron marched down the field and scored on an 8-yard touchdown catch by Charlie Mayer (22) for a 6-0 lead, which would be the score at the end of the first quarter.

The Yoemen defense held tough and caused another Orangefield three and out leading to another punt. Cameron got excellent field position when the punt was blocked by Armando Reyes (6) to put the ball at the Orangefield 11-yard line. Cameron took advantage of that great field position and scored on a nice 7-yard touchdown run by Braylan Drake (1) for a 14-0 lead after a successful two-point conversion.

The Yoemen defense bent a little and allowed a 23-yard run. They forced Orangefield into a fourth and 8, but the Bobcats converted it with a 20-yard touchdown pass to make the score 14-7. The Yoemen responded on offense with a 12-yard run by Reyes, then a finished the drive with a masterful 34-yard touchdown pass from Drake to Trayjen Wilcox (7), with an incredible move juking off two tacklers for a 21-7 lead. The offense had to return to the field because of a fumble recovered by Cameron. They would not take advantage of the fumble and the defense had to return to the field due to an interception thrown by Drake. The Yoemen went into halftime leading 21-7.

Cameron received the ball to start the second half. The Yoemen marched down the field with help from a pair of 18-yard catches by Wilcox. Cameron capped off the drive with an amazing 11-yard touchdown catch by Mayer to make it a 28-7 lead. After a big kickoff return, Orangefield scored on a 4-yard touchdown run to tighten the score 28-13. Cameron responded on offense on their next possession with a 21-yard touchdown catch by Mayer, his third of the game, to take a commanding 35-13 lead.

“On two of the touchdowns, the safety had a hard time getting over the top and that left Charlie open,” Coach Rick Rhoades said. “On his first touchdown, it was just a good throw and catch between Braylan and Charlie.”

Orangefield tried to answer back and marched down the field. The third quarter ended with Cameron ahead 35-13.

The Bobcats were faced with and went for a fourth and 14, but the Yoemen defense held strong and stopped them. The Yoemen couldn’t do much on that drive and was forced to punt. The offense came back on the field after getting an interception by Wilcox. Cameron took advantage of the turnover with a big 52-yard touchdown run by Kardarius Bradley (8), making it a 42-13 lead. Orangefield would respond with a 46-yard touchdown pass on trick play to make the score 42-19 after failed a failed two point try. The Yoemen then began to drain the clock to win the game 42-19. The defense was outstanding, with a fumble, an interception, allowing under 100 yards passing, and allowing only 12 second half points.

“They did a great job of getting lined up correctly and then they really swarmed to the ball,” Rhoades said. “Our defensive staff did a great job of preparing our defense.”

Braylan Drake had a great game, throwing for 190 yards and four touchdowns along with rushing for a touchdown. Kardarius Bradley had a fantastic game, rushing for 104 yards and a touchdown. Charlie Mayer was unbelievable with five catches for 50 yards and three touchdowns. Trayjen Wilcox also had a great game. Along with an interception on defense, he had eight catches for 101 yards and a touchdown.

Up next for the Yoemen will be the Columbus Cardinals in the Regional round of the playoffs.

“It is pretty simple, we have to contain their offense and then execute and move the ball offensively,” Rhoades said. “We also need to win the special teams battle. If we can do all three of these things, I really like our chances.”

The game will be on Friday at Bastrop ISD Memorial Stadium and kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
