Yoemen shut out Tigers 10-0

The Yoemen baseball team shutout the Rockdale Tigers on Thursday 10-0 in six innings by way of the ten-run rule.

Adam Cardona (1) got things started on the mound and pitched a shutout first inning. Ryan Host (10) started off the bottom of the first inning with a leadoff walk, then would steal second base. He would then advance to third base with a line out by Tracer Lopez (3) who was robbed on an outstanding play by the left fielder.

Landon Greene (9) would get Cameron on the scoreboard with a sacrifice RBI (runs batted in) groundout for the first run. The bottom of the first inning ended when Adam Cardona lined out to third base on a bullet caught by the third baseman. Adam Cardona backed up his team and pitched a clean second inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, Bobby Borgas (7) reached first base on a fielding error, followed by a single for Dillan Akin (4). Akin would steal second base. Marino Cardona (15) smacked an RBI single for the second run of the game. Marino hustled to steal second base, another of four total stolen bases in the game by the Yoemen.

“He (the Rockdale pitcher) never really picked off and so we would get bigger leads, I talked to my guys about it,” Coach Hector Delgadillo said. “Also, we talked about it before and we got pop times on the catcher so that helps a lot, so we were able to take advantage of it.”

The lead would be extended on an RBI groundout by Jaidyn Sanchez (11) to send Akin home for a 3-0 lead. The bottom of the second inning ended on a line out to center field. Adam Cardona allowed a leadoff walk in the top of the third inning. He was able to escape any trouble as the inning ended on a failed attempt to steal third base. Brannon McCall (6) would be hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the third inning and stole second base shortly after.

Adam Cardona helped out McCall with an RBI single for a 4-0 lead and also stole second base. The bottom of the third inning ended on a groundout. Adam Cardona allowed a one out double in the top of the fourth inning. That Rockdale runner would get thrown out attempting to stealing third base on a perfectly executed throw by Akin, this came right after Adam Cardona struck out the batter to complete the double play.

Cameron didn’t score in the bottom of the fourth inning. Adam Cardona picked up his team and pitched a shutout fifth inning. McCall got on base in the bottom of the fifth inning on a one out double. Borgas contributed with an RBI single for a 5-0 lead. Cameron continued to pile it on with an RBI single by Marino Cardona for a 6-0 lead. Sanchez kept it going with an RBI double for a 7-0 lead. Marino Cardona would steal home on a wild pitch to extend the lead 8-0. The bottom of the fifth inning ended on a close groundout play to conclude a four run inning.

“I think a big thing was the bottom of the lineup was able to get on base and come through for us,” Delgadillo said. “That’s really been huge for us since the top of our lineup has kind of been struggling. But we got on base and timely execution.”

Adam Cardona continued his dominance on the mound and pitched a shutout sixth inning. McCall would be hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. All of a sudden, the game would be shortly halted due to an unexpected power outage on the field. Amazingly, the crew got together to get the lights back on in the stadium so the game could be finished. The game would be finished on a two RBI double by Armando Reyes (2) for the 10-0 lead and the mercy rule. Adam Cardona pitched a complete game and was one hit away from a no hitter, throwing six strikeouts and allowing just two walks.

“He had everything going,” Delgadillo said. “He had the fastball, curveball, change up, so that was great for him. And he was able to throw strikes early in the count and not fall behind too many times and that helped him.”

The Yoemen are now ranked number 14 in the latest 3A top 25 poll.  They move to 15-5 on the season and are undefeated in district play.
