Yoemen get wins over Lexington
The Cameron Yoemen baseball team hosted the Lexington Eagles on Wednesday, April 10. Cameron was victorious over Lexington, winning 12-1 in six innings.
The Yoemen jumped on Lexington right away with three runs in the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. Xavier Gilmon singled on a ground ball past the pitcher to bring home the first run. That was soon followed by a single to right field by Jamie Reyes, adding two more runs.
Cameron extended their lead with seven more unanswered runs to make the score 10-0 after four innings of play, three runs coming in the third inning and four runs in the fourth inning. The Yoemen were up 10-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning when they scored two runs in the inning to win 12-1 and finish the match in six innings. The runs came from an RBI fielders choice groundout from Jaydon Mendoza and a single by Noah Vega. Cameron collected 11 hits in the game. Braylan Drake, Homero Najera, and Jamie Reyes each had two hits to lead the team. Drake and Reyes were tough to handle, as they each drove in three runs for the Yoemen. Cameron also ran well on the base paths with nine stolen bases in the game.
Braylan Drake earned the win on the mound for Cameron. The right-handed pitcher gave up three hits and one run (zero earned) over four and one-third innings, striking out three and walking none. Kallin Koehl tossed one and one-third innings of shutout ball for Cameron in relief. The lefty gave up zero hits, striking out two and walking one.
The Yoemen traveled to Lexington for another matchup with the Eagles on Friday, April 12. Cameron shut out Lexington, winning 2-0. The Yoemen got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning with the only two runs in the game. Xavier Gilmon came home to score on a single by Braylan Drake with help from a Lexington fielding error, then Kallin Koehl singled on a fly ball to left field, scoring the other run.
Kallin Koehl earned the win on the mound for Cameron. The lefty allowed three hits and zero runs over seven innings, striking out eight and walking one.
The Yoemen traveled to face the McGregor Bulldogs on Tuesday, April 16. Cameron shut out McGregor, winning 10-0.
Cameron jumped on the Bulldogs early with three runs in the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. Two of those runs were earned by Cameron base runners coming home on a ball that got past the catcher, one by Xavier Gilmon and the other by Kason Goolsby. The Yoemen scored another run in the second inning and another in the third inning to make the lead 5-0.
Cameron blew the game open with five runs in the fourth inning to eventually end the game in the fifth inning and win 10-0. All five runs were scored with two outs and on consecutive at bats: a bases loaded walk by Kallin Koehl, a single by Homero Najera, and a double by Noah Vega. Yvanni Cerros earned the win for Cameron Yoe Varsity 2024. The starting pitcher gave up three hits and zero runs over five innings, striking out six and walking three. Dominic Madron took the loss for McGregor Varsity Bulldogs. The starting pitcher went three and one-third innings, allowing eight runs (six earned) on one hit, striking out none and walking seven.
Noah Vega led the way with three runs batted in and went 1-for-2 on the day. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, collecting eight total walks for the game. The Yoemen was stout and didn’t commit a single error in the field. Yvanni Cerros earned the win on the mound for Cameron. He gave up three hits and zero runs over five innings, striking out six and walking three.
This win gives Cameron an overall record of 13-12 and a district record of 4-7. Up next, the Yoemen will return home for a rematch with the Bulldogs. The game will be Friday, April 19, and is set for 7 p.m.
