Yoemen expected to finish third in new District 11-3A

The Cameron Yoemen are picked to reach the playoffs yet again this fall, should the 2020 football season survive the current COVID pandemic.

The annual Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine hit shelves last week and the Yoemen are picked to finish third in Class 3A District 11 Division I.

Cameron is ranked No. 11 in the statewide preseason poll. They are joined there by district opponents No. 7 Rockdale and No. 9 Troy, who are picked ahead of the Yoemen in the district standings.  Those are also the only three teams in the new district that reached the postseason in 2019.

The biannual University Interscholastic League put Cameron into 11-3A DI along with Rockdale, Troy, Lorena, Little River-Academy, Caldwell and McGregor.

Texas Football predicts Lorena to finish fourth in that final postseason slot behind the Yoemen.  Academy, Caldwell and McGregor round out the bottom part of the district.

The magazine also listed 11-3A as one of the three top districts to watch in the entire Class 3A division.

Cameron wide receiver Za’Korien Spikes is on the magazine’s preseason Class 3A all-state team.

Cameron is set to open its season on Aug. 28 at Lago Vista and then host Bellville on Sept 4.  The Yoemen will then go to Franklin o Sept. 11 and host San Antonio Cornerstone Christian on Sept. 18.

The Sept. 25 homecoming game against Caldwell will open up district play and the annual Battle of the Bell game will be played at Rockdale on Oct. 2.

Cameron will host Academy on Oct. 9 and play at Troy on Oct. 16.  The final home game of the year is Oct. 23 against Lorena and the final district game is scheduled for Oct. 30 at McGregor.

The Yoemen were regional finalists in 2019 and had an 11-2 record.
