Yoe wrestlers take on Gatesville at meet

The Cameron Yoe wrestling team hosted the Gatesville Hornets for a wrestling event last week.

Seth Perez (152 pound) started off with a two point takedown for Cameron. He earned two more points for gaining control, then two points for accomplishing the near fall. Perez had a take down to win the match.

Josh Jochec (120 pound) was up next and allowed two points on a takedown against his opponent, then returned the favor on a two point reversal tying the match. He was penalized with a technical violation for locking hands, gaining a point for his opponent. Jochec got pinned to lose the match 6-2.

Brady Havens (132 pound) came up next and gained an advantage two early points. He got out of the first round up 7-5, then went into the third round tied at 11 for a high scoring match. Havens would receive two points on back-to-back technical locking hands fouls. At the end of the fourth and final round, he clinched the decision at 19-14.

“Brady and the boy he was wrestling are both inexperienced and had trouble pinning each other,” Coach Dale Keen said.  “Brady at this time has a tendency to get too high on his opponent and thus his center of gravity is too far forward making it easy for his opponent to slip out of his holds.”

Up next was Jonathan Clouse (145 pound) and allowed a two-point takedown then a three-point near fall and fell behind 5-0. He would gain control for two points and then receive two more points for a takedown. Clouse ended the first round down 5-4 making the match a real nail biter. In the second round would lose two points on a takedown. He finished the second round down 7-5. It would not matter in the next round as Clouse made an exciting move to make the pin down for the amazing victory.

Cecilio Martinez (138 pound) came up next and got a two point takedown. He allowed two points for allowing his opponent to escape the hold. Martinez then gained a point shortly after that to take the lead. Martinez ended first round up 3-2 in a close match. Martinez had a good round earning four points from near falls, ending the final round up 11-8 for the exciting victory. Jonathan Clouse came back for a second match and got the early first round pin on his opponent in impressive fashion. Jordan Wells came up next and ended his match with a quick early pin for the victory.

“They are much more experienced and older,” Keen said. “They (Seth and Jordan) are my best wrestlers. Cecelio and Brady are first year wrestlers and just need more coaching and drilling.”

Brady Havens came back for a second match and lost his match by pin down in the first round. Cecilio Martinez lost his second match by getting pinned quickly in his return match in the first round to end the meet.

“First year wrestlers will always be tested no matter who they wrestle,” Keem said. “Everyone who first comes into wrestling think that if they’re strong and quick that they are going to be able to dominate. But the truth is somebody that really knows how to wrestle can beat you even if they’re not as strong.”

Cameron’s next event is scheduled to be on April 3 for an invitational dual or triangular.
