Offenses light up Yoe Field

Friday night’s game with Bellville showcased the speed that each team has, garnering nearly 100 points on the board combined.

Touchdowns by the Yoemen and Brahmas covered a combined 595 yards, but the Yoemen couldn’t quite keep up with Bellville, losing 54-41 to move to 1-1 on the season.

Bellville’s Richard Reese, a junior running back, carried it 27 times for 347 yards and six touchdowns, added a 40-yard scoring reception on Friday night. The game had a delayed start of 30 minutes due to lightening.

The Yoemen scored on two touchdowns from Pharrell Hemphill. One on an 82-yard kickoff return and an 86-yard leaping catch. Zakorien Spikes had a 64-yard touchdown reception and Phaibian Bynaum had a 41-yard scoring scamper on fourth-and-3.

Quarterback Zane Zeinert completed 12 of 22 passes for 283 yards and the Yoemen gained another 167 on the ground, but it wasn’t enough.

The Yoemen were within 41-35 after Bynaum’s fourth-down TD run at 4:58 in the third. However, Reese countered with the 67-yard TD, and the Yoemen couldn’t get closer.

Bellville scored on five of its six first-half possessions - including four TDs by Reese - and benefitted from a roughing the kicker penalty on Yoe with less than 30 seconds left in the second quarter, and the Brahmas held a 34-21 advantage at halftime.

Reese took the Brahmas’ third snap of the evening 49 yards for a touchdown and 7-0 lead after the PAT with less than three minutes gone in the first quarter.

It was tied 47 seconds later after Spikes took the screen pass from Zeinert, broke a tackle and dashed down the right sideline for a 64-yard touchdown.

On Bellville’s next offensive play Briggs took the handoff, gained the edge and sprinted nearly untouched 53 yards to the end zone.

Reese would then score again from 30 yards out for Bellville’s 21-7 lead at the 3:10 mark.

Cameron turned to running backs Bynaum and Keshon Johnson for some power football on what amounted to a 14-play, 76-yard drive that chewed up more than six minutes and included a conversion on fourth-and-1. It all culminated with Zeinert’s pass to Jaidyn Sanchez in the end zone at 8:47 in the second quarter bringing the score to 21-14.

Reese would score again on a 27-yard touchdown run and 27-14 lead.

The Yoemen got it back to a one-touchdown margin in a hurry. Sanchez set up the Yoemen at the Brahmas 37 with his 40-yard kickoff return. Hemphill then outworked a pair of Bellville defenders for a 30-yard catch and Bynaum took it seven yards in for the touchdown.

After a pair of punts, Yoe looked to have stopped Bellville again, but the roughing penalty kept the Brahmas’ drive alive. Reese made the Yoemen pay, catching Jake Lischka’s pass out of the backfield and taking it for a 40-yard touchdown with 12 seconds left in the first half.

Rees would again take it in on a 40-yard pass from Lishka to start the third quarter.

The Yoemen would get the next two scores when Hemphill returned in 80 yards for a score and Bynaum took it in four yards on a run for Cameron. Jesse Martinez would add both extra points.

Reese then took it in on a 67-yard touchdown for Bellville.

The fourth quarter saw Reese take it two yards for the score and a missed two-point conversion for Bellville.

The Yoemen would score again with 1:52 left in the game on a 36-yard pass from Zeinert to Hemphill, but it wasn’t enough to catch the Brahmas.

Bynaum finished with 113 yards rushing, Spikes added seven receptions for 126 yards and Hemphill’s three catches totaled 125 yards for Yomen.

The Yoemen are set to face Franklin — which had to cancel its game Friday night because of a positive coronavirus test — on Friday night in Franklin. Kick off is at 7:30 p.m.
