Lady Yoe fall to Rogers

The Lady Yoe softball team lost to the Rogers Lady Eagles 11-4 on Tuesday night.

Cameron tried to get things started on a two out double for Mia Wimmer (14). The top of the first inning ended on a pop out to the pitcher. Peyton Polson (18) came out on the mound and allowed a leadoff walk. Polson allowed an RBI (runs batted in) groundout to that led to the first run of the game. The bottom of the first inning ended on a line out to third base. Polson smacked a one out single in the top of the second inning. Taytum Moore (2) came in as a pinch runner and would get thrown out stealing second base.

The inning came to an end on a groundout. Polson allowed a one out single in the bottom of the second inning, then she would hit the next batter, putting a second runner on base. She then gave up a two run single with bases loaded for a 3-0 score. She then surrendered another walk.

Coach Chris Sommerfield decided to make a pitching change for Cameron. Samantha Frausto (12) came in for Polson. Frausto allowed a bases loaded walk for a 4-0 game. She would then give up the fifth and sixth run on wild pitches. The second inning would end on a line out to right field. Cameron couldn’t answer in the top of the third inning as they hit the ball hard three consecutive times, just right in the gloves of Rogers fielders.

The Lady Yoe got into some two out trouble with bases loaded in the bottom of the third inning. Sommerfield made another pitching change: Nevaeh Billingsley (15) came in for Frausto. Billingsley was able to get out of the jam by getting the batter to pop out to right field. Lauren Harris (1) reached second base on a bunt in the top of the fourth inning. Wimmer reached first base on a throwing error and allowed Harris reached third base.

Cameron got on the scoreboard with an RBI bunt single by Lindsay Talafuse (11) for the first run. Unfortunately, Wimmer was tagged out at home plate trying to score a second run. The inning ended on a strikeout by Brianna Acosta (10). Cameron found themselves in another two out bases loaded jam in the bottom of the fourth inning but was able to escape the inning on a swinging strikeout.

“We were letting too many people on base with walks, and it puts a lot of pressure on defense to be perfect,” Sommerfield said.

Cameron couldn’t score in the top of the fifth inning. Billingsley pitched a clean fifth inning. The Lady Yoe tried to get things going with a one out double by Harris in the top of the sixth inning. Talafuse reached first on a throwing error then advanced to second base. Harris ran home for second run for Cameron.

Wimmer scored on a wild pitch for a 6-3 game. Talafuse then advanced to home plate on another wild pitch closing the gap to 6-4. The sixth inning ended on a heartbreaking double play. To start the bottom of the sixth inning, Billingsley allowed a leadoff single. She then allowed a run on an infield single then a two run single for a 9-4 score on a questionable call where it appeared the runner was out but was called safe.

The bad luck continued as she gave up a two run single that allowed Rogers to make the score 11-4. The bottom of the sixth inning finally ended on a groundout. Cameron did not answer back and would fall to Rogers 11-4.

Even with this loss, the Lady Yoe have a district record of 4-3 and an overall record of 10-16. At the moment, they are sitting in third place in the district standings. This leaves them in a good position to make the playoffs if they finish strong. Their next game will be on Friday at home against the Caldwell Lady Hornets. First pitch will be at 6 p.m. and this game will be a battle for the third place in the district standings.
