Lady Yoe fall to Caldwell, Academy

The Lady Yoe basketball team fell to the Caldwell Lady Hornets 49-32 on Jan. 11. That defeat put their district record at 2-3.

On Friday, they attempted to even their district record on the road against the Little River Academy Lady Bees. The Lady Yoe would lose to Academy 57-26.

After an early bright start to the game with a three-point make by Claudia Campos (44), the Lady Yoe began to struggle and their early lead turned into a 9-3 deficit. The Lady Bees soon grew the Cameron deficit to 14-4. The first quarter ended with Academy leading over Cameron 22-4. After early struggles in the second quarter, the Lady Yoe scored on a basket by Camryn Ward (22) for a 29-6 deficit. This was soon followed by a layup by Campos off an assist by Aliya Salazar (30) to make the score 33-10. Cameron went into halftime trailing Academy 35-10.

After a slow start in the third quarter, the Lady Yoe scored on a layup by Kaly White (3) to make the score 46-14. The third quarter ended with Cameron trailing the Lady Bees 45-15. The Lady Yoe scored on a basket by Mia Wimmer (11) to make the score 46-17. Unfortunately, the Lady Bees continued to score as Cameron’s deficit grew to 52-20, and they went on to lose to Academy 57-26.

“We picked up that they wanted to get the ball to #21, who is an incredible post player,” Coach Destini Juri said. “So we just tried to limit her touches and it worked out well. The fight and commitment the girls showed against Academy will help us out big time going forward.”

This now gives Cameron an overall record of 9-19 and a district record of 2-4. Up next for the Lady Yoe was a road matchup on Tuesday against the Florence Lady Buffaloes.

Coach Juri plans to use what they took from the Academy loss and use it for the game against Florence and the rest of the season.

“I was extremely pleased with how we played and we will continue to keep building and growing together,” Juri said.

The Lady Yoe fell to the Lady Buffaloes 45-33 in a heartbreaker. Cameron will not be playing on Friday as it will be a bye week.
