Lady Yoe defeat Milano in three-game sweep

The Cameron Lady Yoe volleyball team defeated the Milano Lady Eagles volleyball team in a three set sweep on Tuesday night.

The first five points of the first set went to Cameron. Milano broke the streak for their first point of the set for a 5-1 score, however Cameron then scored two straight points. A failed Cameron serve made the score 7-2 Lady Yoe.

Later, a kill by Haley Tucker (6) of Cameron gave the Lady Yoe a 9-4 lead, and Cameron went up by seven off a kill by Tucker for a 14-7 lead, another of her five total kills. The Lady Yoe kept at it with a kill by Jessa Flores (13) of Cameron for a 16-7 lead, and the lead grew to ten with a dig out of bounds by Milano. The set was sealed off a block by Sydni Smith (1) and Kaley White (3) to win the first set 25-10.

The first two points of the second set went to Cameron. Milano marched back to tie the game back 2-2, when Flores took back the lead on a kill, another of her six total kills. Cameron started to surge as their lead grew to 12-4. Milano broke the drought with a much needed score for a 15-5 deficit. The Cameron lead jumped to eleven at 17-6. Milano got an impressive kill by Montgomery Popham (10) of Milano for a 19-9 game, then scored two more consecutive points in a row for a 19-11 game. Milano would only score one more point after that as Cameron continued on to win the second set 25-12.

In the third set, the first point went to Milano off of a failed serve by the Lady Yoe. The Lady Eagles got a much-needed kill by Karyme Santana (7) of Milano for a 2-1 lead, and they tried to keep the momentum going as they grew their lead to 5-2. However, it didn’t last long as Cameron marched back 5-4, when the Lady Yoe tied the set at 6-6. Cameron then took the lead 8-7 on a failed kill by Milano. Cameron grew their lead to 10-7 and continued to keep Milano in check and grew the lead to 19-10. Cameron would shortly pull through and win the third set 25-14 to give them the three set sweep.

“The girls were ready to play tonight,” Lady Yoe Coach Maria Gonzalez said. “I think we did a good job of executing our middles tonight. That’s something that we are working on in practice and they did a much better job of setting them even in transition tonight. We served tough and made sure we earned our points.”

The overall stats for the Lady Yoe were impressive. Kaly White had five aces, a block, 27 assists, and two digs. Ainsley Driska had two aces, one dig, and 14 kills. Kirsten Marin recorded three aces and eight digs. A focus of Cameron was getting past the tough defense of Milano, and the practice paid off as Cameron was able to keep the Lady Eagles off balance for most of the game.

“Milano is a team known for their defense so we talked about serving tough and keeping them out of system,” Gonzalez said. “I believe each of our girls came out tonight with two or more aces. In a game where serve and pass is crucial, I think we did a great job of being in system and being able to set all of our attackers.”

One thing that was certainly a factor, in Coach Wendy King’s mind was the fatigue level as her team did not seem to have the energy that would have been valuable in the game against Cameron.

“My group was out of gas from the previous match with Mumford,” Milano Coach Wendy King said. “We are not in great shape right now. That was very apparent. We struggle passing serve and did do better against Mumford but just couldn’t move beyond that.”

Both schools will be participating in an in-season tournament starting today. Up next for Milano will be them participating in a tournament hosted by Rosebud-Lott and will play Mumford separately on Friday. The tournament Cameron will be playing in this weekend will be hosted by Jewitt Leon beginning today.
