Franklin knocks Yoemen out of playoffs

The Cameron Yoemen basketball team got knocked out of the playoffs by the Franklin Lions on Tuesday night.

The team traveled to Bryan to take on the Lions in the Bi-District round of the playoffs, falling to the Lions in a 57-56 heartbreaker to bring to end to their season. 

The first couple minutes of the game were even as no team could get much rhythm. Cameron scored on a successful three point play by Charlie Mayer (4) for a 6-3 lead. The Yoemen added to the lead with a three point shot by J.W. Hollas (3) to make the score 11-5. Franklin came back with an offensive spurt and the score became 13-12, then the Lions took the lead 14-13. Cameron responded with a three pointer by Hollas to tie the game at 16. The first quarter ended with Cameron trailing 17-16.

The second quarter started with a layup by Braylan Drake (1) for a 18-17 lead. That was soon followed with a three pointer by Connor Barton (15) to make it a 21-20 Cameron lead. Ryan Host (5) came through with a big three point shot for a 25-23 lead. The game went into halftime with both teams tied at 26.

After a layup by Franklin to start the third quarter, Cameron responded with a basket by Mayer to tie the game at 28. The Yoemen went on a run and scored on a three pointer by Hollas, making it a 34-29 lead. The Lions fought back to make the score 34-33, but the Yoemen responded with a basket by Mayer to take a 36-33 lead. The Yoemen would stay ahead with a big layup by Hollas to make the score 40-35. The third quarter ended with Cameron ahead 42-40. 

Both teams started the fourth quarter slowly, as neither team could find a basket. Barton came up huge with a three pointer for a 45-41 lead. Franklin went on a 5-0 spurt and regained the lead 46-45. Hollas came through with a clutch three point shot to put Cameron in the lead 48-46. Franklin would tie the game at 50 to end the fourth quarter and the game went into overtime.

The Yoemen started overtime slowly and fell behind 54-50. Barton gave the team new life with a huge three pointer to close the deficit to 54-53. 

The Yoemen would take the lead on a clutch three point shot by Host to go ahead of Franklin 56-55. The Lions would get a layup with five seconds left on the clock to make the score 57-56. 

The Yoemen had a chance for a buzzer beater with those last five seconds left in the game. Cameron came up ever so short and would lose 57-56 to bring their season to an end.
