Thorndale sending two to State track meet

Thorndale will be sending two Bulldog athletes to the UIL state track and field championships.

Michael Herzog is the region boys’ triple jump champion and Branson McCoy earned the “wild card” spot after his top three finish in the 100 meter dash at the region meet.

Herzog’s winning jump was 47 feet, 3.25 inches.  His nearest competitor jumped more than two feet less than the Thorndale senior.

McCoy finished third in the boys 100 meter dash in a time of 11.09 seconds.  His brother Carson was sixth in the race in 11.61 seconds.

Branson is advancing to the state meet in the final ninth spot in the race line up.  Each of the four state regions advance their top two finishers in each event.  Then, the best of those four third place finishers earn the “wild card” slot.

The state track meet is scheduled for May 6-8 at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.

The Class 2A Region IV track meet was held Friday and Saturday at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

Branson also placed in the 400 dash, crossing the finish line fifth in 51.91 seconds.

Stryker Leschber was fifth in the discus, with a toss of 127-10. Blake Roberts was 10th in the pole vault at 9-6 and Jake Ivy was 10th in the high jump at 5-6.

Thorndale’s boys team finished 10th in the final league standing with 21 points.

Milano had three athletes compete at the region meet.

On Friday, Kadance Koenig finished eighth in the girls 3200 run, with a time of 13:22.  Then on Saturday, she was 10th in the 1600 meter, running the race in 6:04.

Andy Gutierrez also competed in the distance races on Friday and Saturday.  He finished 15th in the 3200 meters with a 11:46 performance.  On Saturday he ran the 1600 meters in 5:21, for an 11th place finish.

Gael Alcala ran in the boys’ 800 meters on Saturday.  He finished in 11th place with a time of 2:17.
