Lady Dogs claim district title with sweep of Milano

The No. 10 Thorndale Lady Dogs (29-5, 13-0) claimed the District 25-2A title on Tuesday night after sweeping Milam County neighbor Milano on the road.

The team has one game left on Saturday for a chance to garner an undefeated league championship.

Lady Dogs head coach Angel Raines said the work ethic and experience of the team has helped fuel them during district play and will hopefully in the postseason as well.

“I’m really proud of these girls this season. They are taking their past successes and working each day to build on and do better than and that started with a district championship,” Coach Raines said.  “I’m very thankful for this group of girls; hopefully they’re just getting started.”

Against Milano on Tuesday night, the Lady Dogs won 25-14, 25-20 and 26-24.

Madi Smith pounded out 12 kills, seven digs, three assists and a block.  Landri Leschber and Kyndal Robinson each had 11 kills.  Leschber added 18 assists, eight digs, three blocks and an ace, with Robinson also recording 16 assists and a block.

Allison Albert pulled out seven digs and Landri Martinka added five digs.  Tristyn Buchanan and Reaghan Carlson each crushed two kills, with Buchanan adding four blocks and two digs and Carlson three digs.

Rainey Buchanan collected two kills and three digs and Jayci Martinka pulled out four digs and two aces.

On Friday night, Thorndale swept Buckholts at Bulldog Gym, defeating the Lady Badgers 25-11, 25-14 and 25-7.

Leschber smashed 25 kills, nine assists, eight digs, three aces and a block, with Robinson adding 23 assists, nine digs, nine aces, five kills and two blocks.

Jayci Martinka added nine kills, four digs, two assists and an ace, while Rainey Buchanan recorded three kills and five digs.  Carlson had two kills and a dig and Landri Martinka served up three aces and three digs.

Albert pulled up four digs and an assist and Pesl had three digs and an ace.  Shannon Hadd collected a kill and Tristyn Buchanan added a block and a dig.

The Lady Dogs will finish up the regular season on Friday afternoon when they host Mumford for “Senior Night.”
