Bulldogs have successful run in tournament play

Last weekend, the Thorndale Bulldogs baseball team participated in an in-season tournament hosted by the Brentwood Christian Bears JV team.

The Bulldogs were outstanding in the tournament, scoring a total of 59 runs and gave up just one run. Thorndale played two games on Friday February 25, the first game was against the McGregor Bulldogs, and Thorndale shut out McGregor 8-0.

Thorndale got things started in the first inning with three runs.  The scoring began with a sacrifice fly by Bryson Beran that scored one run for the Bulldogs. The next two runs would come off of bases loaded walks by JD Alcalar and Hunter Clark. Bases loaded walks would also be how Thorndale scored both runs in the second inning, the walks were by Coy Stutts and Alcalar. Thorndale scored three runs in the third inning. The Bulldogs put the pressure on, led by an error on a ball put in play by Broedie Salas and Coy Stutts and another sacrifice fly by Bryson Beran.

Both Kaden Kovar and Logan Davis collected one hit to lead the Bulldogs. Davis also scored three of the eight runs. Bryson Beran was amazing on the mound against McGregor, as he threw a no-hitter to lead Bulldogs past McGregor 8-0.

Their second game on Friday was the St. Andrews Highlanders, and Thorndale destroyed the Highlanders 18-0 in a game that lasted just three innings. The Bulldogs came out hot in the first inning with five runs, with a fielder’s choice RBI (runs batted in) groundout by Logan Davis and consecutive doubles by Coy Stutts and Broedie Salas. The fifth run came on an RBI triple by Hunter Clark. The onslaught continued in the third and final inning, as the Bulldogs put up seven runs to make the score 18-0. Broedie Salas played amazing, going 4 for 4 at the plate with 3 runs and 4 RBIs. Logan Davis was also great going 2 for 3 at the plate, collecting 3 runs and 3 RBIs. Luke Merz was good at the plate hitting 3 for 4. He was also outstanding on the mound; with the exception of a few errors pitched a perfect game, no hits, runs, or walks in three innings.

The Bulldogs then played two games on Saturday. The first game was against the Jarrell Cougars, and Thorndale walloped the Cougars 17-0 in another game that lasted three innings. The Bulldogs exploded in the first inning with 15 runs with big help from a three run home run by Broedie Salas and seven consecutive walks and errors during the inning. They would follow that inning with 2 more runs in the second inning off of RBI singles by Hunter Clark and Kaden Kovar. Clark was fantastic on the mound, pitching three innings and allowing no runs on no hits and no walks.

The last game for the Bulldogs was the hosts, the Brentwood Christian Bears JV team. Thorndale handily defeated the Bears 16-1 in a game that lasted two and a half innings. The bulldogs scored 6 runs in the first inning in large part due to a massive grand slam by Broedie Salas. Thorndale went on to score an impressive 10 runs in the second inning with lots of assistance from fielding errors committed by the Bears. Logan Davis was a big contributor with hitting 3 for 3 at the plate with 3 runs and 2 RBIs. Hunter Thigpen also batted well, hitting 2 for 3. He also performed great on the mound, pithcing 2 innings and allowing one run on two hits with 4 strikeouts. Coy Stutts came in for an inning and pitched a clean inning to go with 3 strikeouts.
