Sammie Dell Markham

Sammie Dell Markham Walker peacefully passed away and journeyed to her Savior on Dec. 21, 2019, surrounded by her family.  She was born on Nov. 2, 1932, in Cameron, to Florence and Doc Markham.

After growing up in Cameron, and working for McLane Company, Sammie moved to Corpus Christi.  It was there that she met Jack W. Walker, a Naval officer, at First Methodist Church of Corpus Christi and they married in 1960.  During their 59-year marriage, Jack’s career in the energy industry took them from south Texas to Tripoli, Libya, to Houston.

Sammie received a B.A. in English, graduating Magna Cum Laude, from Texas A&I College in Kingsville, TX in 1964, and taught school in several places.

Family, serving God and hospitality were central to Sammie’s life, enhanced by her love of people and sense of humor.  She was a devoted, loving and fun wife and mother, and cherished her four grandchildren.  She hosted countless gatherings for family and friends, for holidays and celebrations of all kinds.  Also, because of her strong Christian faith, for over 60 years she served in children, youth and adult ministries, including Bible Study Fellowship and her Faithbridge Praying Sisters small group.

Sammie is survived by her loving husband, Jack W. Walker; her daughter, Tobi Walker McKenzie, her son, Robert G. Walker; and grandchildren, Bryant McKenzie, Jared McKenzie, Avery Walker and Hilary Walker.

Sammie is preceded in death by her parents Florence Houston Markham and Doc Markham.

The family plans to celebrate Sammie’s life with a memorial service on Jan. 3, 2020, at 1 p.m. at Faithbridge United Methodist Church, 18000 Stuebner Airline, Spring, TX 77379.

In lieu of flowers, if desired, memorials may be given in her name to Bible Study Fellowship, 19001 Huebner Road, San Antonio, TX  78258-4019, www.bsfinternational.org
