Jerry Herring

Funeral services for Jerry Herring, 79, of Rockdale, were held on Friday, Oct. 22, 2021, at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings with Rev. Anthony Kiddy officiating.  Burial followed in the Barnes Family and Friends Cemetery in Paige.  Visitation was held on Thursday and Friday at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings. 

Jerry Ray Herring was born Dec. 15, 1941, in Mesa, Ariz., to Larkin “L.S.” Stephenson Herring and Edna Rebecca (Leach) Herring.  He was baptized at the Assembly of God church in Pueblo, Colorado.  He served in the United States Army from May 2, 1961 until receiving his Honorable Discharge on June 14, 1967 having obtained the rank of SPC5.  Jerry married Gloria Ann Weaks on May 2, 1969 at the Church of God in Temple.  He was a truck driver for Abram’s Construction in Austin before becoming his own owner/operator.  Jerry was a member of the Elgin VFW and the Belton VFW.  He enjoyed fishing, camping, and boating.  He could often be found sitting on the porch, drinking coffee, watching the birds, playing with the dogs, and contemplating life.  He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren.  

Jerry passed away suddenly during the evening of Sunday, Oct. 17, 2021, at his home in Rockdale.

He was preceded in death by his parents, L.S. and Edna Herring; his son, Dwayne Herring; and his brother, Robert Herring.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Gloria Herring of Rockdale; his daughter, Shirley Gragg and her husband Mike of Colorado; four grandchildren, Chris Barnes and his wife Holly of Alabama, Corey Barnes and his wife Lynsie of Paige, Dustin Herring of Paige, and Nikki vonGonten and her husband Kolby of Milano; six great-grandchildren, Kayleigh Barnes, Sarah Barnes, and Jennifer Barnes, all of Alabama, Kynlie Barnes of Paige, Kaylyn Kasberg of Paige, and Tucker vonGonten of Milano; two sisters, Frances Segura of Colorado and Kathlene Hildebrand and her husband Dean of Colorado; as well as several nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends. 

Pallbearers will be Dustin Herring, Corey Barnes, Chris Barnes, Kolby vonGonten, Barry Blackstock, and Lance Barr.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Edward Lenz and Wesley Myers

Memorials may be made to GTAustin Manor Campus or to the charity of one’s choice.
