Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District awards grants to local water utilities

Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District announced grants awarded to local Water Utilities in Burleson and Milam Counties on April 28. The District awarded five grants totaling approximately $1,000,000 for programs to conserve groundwater and has awarded approximately $14.55 million since 2006.

This year grants included Marlow WSC who was awarded $75,341 to replace obsolete water lines, City of Rockdale was awarded $200,000 to replace obsolete water lines, Milano WSC was awarded  $64,500 to replace obsolete water meters, Clara Hills C.A. was awarded $213,575 to replace obsolete water lines and hydrants, Burleson Co. MUD #1 was awarded $315,870 to replace obsolete water lines and Southwest Milam WSC was awarded $130,714 to replace obsolete water lines for a total of $1,000,000.

The district encourages and supports projects and programs to conserve and/or preserve groundwater, by annually funding the District’s Groundwater Conservation Grant Program. During the years when the District’s revenues remain at a level sufficient to fund the program, the Board determines the amount to be given each year.  The objective of this program is to obtain the active participation and cooperation of local water utilities in the funding and successful completion of programs and projects that will result in the conservation of groundwater in the District. The qualifying water conservation projects and programs will include, as appropriate, projects that result in the conservation of groundwater and reduce the loss or waste of groundwater.

Each year, local water utilities in Burleson and Milam Counties are eligible to apply for the current year’s grants. In the application they show their commitment to groundwater conservation, and the benefits that will be gained by the District awarding the grants.

POSGCD also has many additional programs of benefit to local citizens including providing grants assisting fire departments with the cost of water conservation efforts, assisting landowners with the cost of plugging abandoned water wells, and providing grants for Rain Water Harvesting efforts in the district. The district also provides community services and educational presentations to citizens concerning groundwater and conservation, and in 2018 the Board of Directors adopted the POSGCD Groundwater Well Assistance Program (GWAP).
