No new COVID-19 cases reported in Milam County so far

Milam County has reported no new cases of COVID-19 in the county as of Monday morning.

Milam County Judge Steve Young in an announcement on Sunday, March 29, said there have been no new cases.

“The order is working,” Young said. “We have not had a new case in over 10 days. Brazoria County does not have a shelter in place order and its confirmed cases tripled so far this weekend.”

He asked that residents continue to shelter in place.

The countywide shelter in place order is in effect at least until April 7, 2020,” he said. “The Commissioners Court will review the situation on Monday, April 6, to consider an extension of the order. However, this is not going to be a short-term problem. The virus will be around for a long time. Right now we are just trying to keep the numbers down.”

He asked everyone to remember there is no cure. The only thing one can do for protection is to avoid contact with others.

Schools across the county will remain closed until at least April 3. School districts and county officials are expected to meet this week to consider extending that closure or reopening.

Young also said that county officials inspected the hospitals in the county with representatives from Emergency Management and the National Guard for possible overflow usage.

“The proposed usage is for level 3, non-Covid patients,” he said. “There are some that predict the hospitals in Texas will be at capacity by the third week of April.”

Young said the Rockdale hospital was licensed for 25 beds and the Cameron hospital was licensed for 10 beds at the time of closure.

“We advised we were certainly willing to allow the facilities to be used for that purpose,” Young said.
