Milam Touch of Love group looking for pet fosters, volunteers

A new organization in Milam County is looking to help find homes for abandoned animals.

Milam Touch of Love has been working for a couple of months now to get the word out about how to help with reconnecting lost animals and help with the Cameron City Pound.

The group was formed a few years back when City of Cameron Animal Control Officer Sandra Rich began Cameron Touch of Love as a Facebook page to help reconnect lost pets with their owners.

“Word got out about the pound and how it was reconnecting lost pets,” Milam Touch of Love President Jean Schara said. “A couple of months ago a group of us got together to figure out how we can work on getting more support. We expanding our reach to support the project throughout the county.”

Schara said there was a misconception that the pound was euthanizing, but that is not the case.

“Sandra has a commitment to finding homes for all the pets that are in the pound,” Schara said. “We are committed to educating people about animal care.”

She said the group named itself in honor of Sandra’s work and is continuing on with the name Milam Touch of Love.

The group became a legal entity on May 3 and got its 501-C3 status in early June. They have already begun to raise funds with a Spirit Night fundraiser at Dairy Queen in Cameron last week.

“Right now we really need volunteers and fosters,” she said. “We need people who can work at the pound cleaning, feeding and watering the animals. We have flexible times.”

The group is also taking monetary donations and those can be mailed to P.O. Box 222, Cameron TX 76520.

Schara said there is a fostering program in place for cats and the group is looking for someone to head up a dog program in the county.

“We are currently based in Cameron,” she said. “But we want to expand throughout the county. If anyone in another part of the county is interested, please contact us.”

She said the group hopes to help with funding transports for spay/neuter and is working on a program to trap, neuter and return feral cats to hopefully begin controlling the cat population.
