Milam County Shelter in Place to expire May 8

Milam County's Shelter in Place orders will expire at 12:01 a.m. on May 8.

Commissioners voted 4-1 to end the orders and allow the county to conform to current executive orders enacted by Governor Greg Abbott in an emergency meeting this morning, May 7.

Commissioner Fisher was the only dissenting vote.

County Judge Steve Young said county offices will be allowed to open or stay closed to the public at their own discretion.

Milam County Health Director Robert Kirkpatrick agreed with the move, saying it was a tough balance to strike between being strict and cautious.

Kirkpatrick added that people need to continue to do the right things such as social distance and use good hygiene.

Fisher said it was too early to re-open in case of any flare ups.

There have been no new cases in the county since last weekend. The count remains at 18.
