Annual event raises funds for Muscular Dystrophy Association

The 5th Annual Project Maynardstang Cruise In and Fly In is set for this Saturday, Sept. 30, from 5-7 p.m. at the Cameron Municipal Airpark. The event is free to spectate and will feature fun for the entire family.

Project Maynardstang is a group created by Cameron native and 2016 Yoe alumni Cody Schoppe. He uses the group to raise awareness of muscular dystrophy and to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

At the age of three Schoppe was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) which is a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness due to the alterations of a protein called dystrophin that helps keep muscle cells intact. At the time of his diagnosis life expectancy for someone with DMD was late teens to very early twenties. Next month Schoppe will turn 26. Advancements in treatments and medications, discovered through research, supported by MDA, have given individuals living with muscle disease a longer life expectancy and an improved quality of life.

Schoppe has supported MDA since he was very young, appearing for several years on local television broadcasts of the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon. He was the Central Texas MDA ambassador and worked with them promoting central Texas muscle walks and fund raising events.

Schoppe runs Project Maynardstang on his own, posting motivational quotes on social media and making videos about living with muscular dystrophy and automotive content. The cruise-in is his biggest event and biggest fund raiser of the year. Over the years, through Project Maynardstang, he has raised thousands of dollars for MDA. You can find Project Maynardstang online at projectmaynatdstang.com, on Facebook and Instagram @ projectmaynardstang, on Twitter @ projectmaynard1, and by searching Project Maynardstang on YouTube.

The main attraction at this year’s event is a cruise-in/car show. A minimum $10 donation is required to enter a vehicle into the show. For the first time ever trophies will be given to the best vehicles at the show with the grand prize being the Maynard’s choice award. A silent auction is being held with several hand made items.

Thorndale Meat Market will be selling sausage wraps, chips and drinks. Hobby Town from Waco will have a radio control vehicle race track set up for those interested in the RC hobby. Hobby Town will have a few RC vehicles to use or you can use your own. The Morgan Aviation Museum will be open as well.

The event is being sponsored by Late Model Restoration (LMR) and Bulldog Auto Detailing. The Cameron PD and VFD will also be in attendance. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
