Railroad Museum invites help to reassemble Old Town Cameron

The Milam County Railroad Museum is inviting kids 13 years of age or older (that includes kid-like adults) that would like to be a part of reassembling Old Town Cameron. The group will meet at the new museum three Saturdays in May.

There have been Cameron citizens that have told us they would be interested in helping us, but they weren’t sure how to help. Here is your chance to get hands on practice in the skills that will help us. We will be giving these skill classes on all techniques you will need. You will construct miniature hills and valleys, lay track and track ballast, work with electrical wire, paint, plant grasses (and invasive plants), create ponds, creeks and rivers and plant miniature trees.

We will have three “Pre-build” class sessions.  Classes will be on three consecutive Saturdays, May 6, May 13, and May 20 from 1-4 p.m.  We will be in the new classroom at the Railroad Museum, 110 W. First Street.  Please enter through the Milam County Historic Museum next door. The practice classes will be about three hours long. Each class session will cover a different topic.  When we’ve finished, you will have had hands on skill practice on everything that will help rebuild Old Town Cameron in June.

Later, when the museum reopens, volunteers will be needed to share the story of Old Town Cameron and the Railroad History of Milam County.  There will be an adult model railroad club and a Jr. Engineer Club with lots of activities and opportunities for everyone. Club members will learn advanced techniques in modeling all scales of railroads.  Great museums have enthusiastic volunteers that enjoying sharing knowledge with others.  The only thing we ask is that everyone have fun, make new friends, learn something new and enjoy the pleasure of supporting one of Milam County’s most popular tourist venues.  Come join our great team and share our story with our visitors.

If you would like to participate in the free classes and help rebuild Old Town Cameron, we ask that you sign up.
