Blessings From God Food pantry

The distribution dates for the Blessings From God Food Pantry are:  August 24 from 8-9:30 a.m.; Sept. 7 and 21 from 8-9:30 a.m.; Oct. 5 and 19 from 8-9:30 a.m.; Nov. 9 and 23 from 8-9:30 a.m.; Dec. 7 and 21 from 8-9:30 a.m. The pantry is located at 1300 N. Austin in Cameron. They are still accepting donations, please call Franklin Glaser at (254) 455-0380 to donate. Mobile pantry will be at The Yards of Cameron every third Wednesday of the month. 

 

Bea’s Kitchen Meals

Bea’s Kitchen is still giving out frozen meals every other Thursday. If you would like to receive meals, please call (254) 697-2243 as the number has changed.

 

COVID-19 Vaccine Clinics

Milam County Health Department will hold free COVID-19 vaccination clinics on: Thursday, Aug. 12, 2021 – Buckholts Community Center 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Friday, Aug. 13, 2021 – Cameron Health Department 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free COVID-19 testing at the Cameron Fire Department on Thursday, Aug. 12, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

 

Legacy Nursing School Supplies

The residents at Legacy Nursing facility will be handing out sack lunches and sacks of school supplies on Friday morning from 10:45-11:45 a.m. (mainly for the younger students). Parent/grandparent should drive through the circle at front entrance. Children must be present. The residents and the Activity Director will distribute. Our intent to practice social distancing, so please do not get out of your car. 

 

Legacy Nursing Garage Sale

Legacy Nursing Facility will be having a Outside “garage” sale in the back parking lot on Saturday, Aug. 14, from 8 a.m. to noon. Items have been donated by families and staff. This is to benefit the Activity Department to provide the funds for some of our larger functions for our residents. If you have any items that you would like to donate, please contact Sissy Wallace, Activity Director before Thursday at 697-6564 or bring up to Legacy Nursing Facility.

 

Free water

Holy Ground Baptist Church will be distributing free water at Brookshire Brothers on Aug. 14 at 10 a.m. One case per family.

 

O.J. Thomas Alumni 56th Homecoming

O.J. Thomas Alumni will celebrate its 56th Homecoming “Never Ending Legacy - United As One” on Friday, Aug. 13. A banquet will be held in the school cafeteria starting at 7 p.m. Cost is $20 per person. Your choice of meat (chicken or steak). On Saturday, Aug. 14 the O.J. Thomas Parade will line up at 9 a.m. in the 12th Street Park and the parade will begin at 10 a.m. The Bulldog Membership Luncheon will be held at noon in the cafeteria. Upon payment of membership dues you will receive a meal ticket. Non-members will pay $10. Quarterly meeting will be at 2 p.m. On Saturday evening there will be a dance from 9-11 p.m. The cost will be $20 at the door. Legendary Joe Tex, Joe Tex II and Pee Wee will be performing. Girl Scouts Swim Party

Milam County Girl Scouts are going to have a free swim party at the Rockdale City Pool for all girls who want to join Milam County Girl Scouts. Girls from Cameron, Rockdale, Milano, Gause, Thorndale and Buckholts can come and swim for free on Aug. 13 from 6-8 p.m. at the Rockdale City Pool located at Veterans Park at 1900 Mistletoe Ln. Come join girl scouts and swim for free. Drinks and snacks provided. Girl Scouts is for girls only going into Kindergarten through 12th grade. You can attend troop meetings and activities when you have time. We understand girls have very busy schedules. Did you know many universities and colleges offer scholarships for girls who have received their gold award? A recruit into Military Service can enter at a higher rank if they have received their Gold award. We have troops in every town in Milam County. Milam County Memorial Ruck and Ride 

Event officials said the 3rd annual Memorial Ruck and Ride event will be Aug. 14. Each year, veterans and the community gather to pay tribute to our Milam County fallen military members and their families through the ruck march and motorcycle ride. Veteran and adaptive athlete Kris Briggs will lead the 8-mile ruck starting at 9 a.m. from Cameron Fire Station out to Denio’s and back. Veteran and Combat Vets Motorcycle Association member Matthew Klatt will lead the ride starting at 10 a.m. from Brookshire Brothers in Rockdale to the Cameron Fire Station. A lunch honoring Gold Star families will follow with special guest speakers. Everyone is invited to participate in this event and donations are being sought to assist with expenses. BIG BOY NO. 4014

The Union Pacific’s 1,200,000-pound, 132-foot long steam engine named Big Boy No. 4014 will be stopping overnight in Hearne, Aug. 15.  If you want to brush up against a living piece of our nation’s history – be there.  More information is at:  https://www.up.com/heritage/steam/schedule/index.htm.

 

St. Monica’s Picnic

St. Monica’s Catholic Church will hold its Homecoming Picnic on Sunday, Aug. 15. BBQ plates for $12. Serving begins at 10 a.m. until sold out. Game booths begin at noon. Bingo from noon to 4 p.m. Entertainment by Edward Kopecky Fun Time Czech Band. Horseshoe and Corn Hole Tournaments. Registration at 11:30 a.m. Begins at 1 p.m.

Seminar

Yoe Nation is invited to join at the conclusion of YHS Open House on Aug. 23 at 8 p.m. in the YHS Cafeteria to learn about the process of participating in collegiate athletics. Topics include: standardized test scores and testing, grade point averages, highlight tapes and social media, and NCAA eligibility center resources.

 

AlCOA Retirees

Rockdale ALCOA Retirees will hold  a meeting on Thursday, Sept. 9. The meeting will be held at the Thorndale Veteran’s Memorial Hall (formally known as the VFW Hall). Doors open at 5 p.m. The business meeting begins at 5:45. A BBQ meal will follow the meeting.Plates will be $15 each at the door. Donations towards hall rental will be accepted. Dessert group M - Z.

 

We Fight For Johnnie

We Fight For Johnnie Sanders Fundraiser will be held on Sept. 11. Meal at 5 p.m. with live auction at 6:30 p.m. Brisket plates are $10 per plate. Gun raffle tickets for $20 per ticket. Will be at the Cameron VFW, 2021 Temple Highway in Cameron. Johnnie is a 1978 graduate of Yoe High and worked at Sanders Corner Stop, who is battling an aggressive form of small intestine cancer.

 

Story Time

Children’s Story Time at the Cameron Public Library is on Wednesdays at two different sessions. Pick the one you want. Or come in anytime to browse for books. The times are 10:30 a.m. and  4 p.m. Hope to see some folks on Wednesdays.

 

Old Town Cameron Railroad Museum

The Milam County Railroad Museum home of the 1940’s Old Town Cameron model continues to be open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.  However, they are monitoring the Coronavirus cases in Milam County and the surrounding counties.  They ask that everyone that can, get vaccinated so they can remain open along with other businesses in our community.  The Railroad Museum is one of Milam County’s most popular tourist venues.  They have been hosting families from all over Texas and the United States this summer.

Recovery Services

Change 180 Christian Recovery, a free service, is held every Thursday at 7 p.m. at 204 S. Jefferson in Cameron. This is a self help group that focuses on addiction education. For information, email change180CR@gmail.com or call (254) 605-0039.
