This week in Milam County ...

I think it’s safe to say that after last week’s Parade-A-Palooza, we are well into the exciting, fun, and hectic days of the Christmas Season.

The parades this year were outstanding. There were more people, more venders, more entries, and… well… just more of everything; including holiday spirit. A friend of mine who lives south of here commented on how wonderful all the events were here and how nice it is to see the “Mayberryesque” appeal that is Milam County. Congratulations from the Nurse and me to all who worked on these, it was wonderful to be involved and I look forward to next year’s parades.

Monday night was the annual Tree of Angels ceremony. This is an annual event hosted by the Milam County Attorney’s office that takes time out of this holiday season to reflect on the losses we have endured both this year and in the past. Many families were represented, and it was a beautiful evening to remember those we have lost and to fellowship and support those who remain. Thanks to the County Attorney’s office for their hard work on this project.

Last week we spoke about the Board of Directors positions for the Postoak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District (POSGCD) and the Milam County Emergency Services District No. 1 (ESD1). The Applications can be found on the County Judge’s page of Milam County webpage at www.milamcounty.net. Applications are due to the County Judge’s office by Dec. 22 and can be emailed to the office, sent via traditional mail, or brought in personally. Interviews will take place the afternoon of Wednesday, Dec. 27, at 1 p.m.

These two entities, the POSGCD and the ESD1, are integral to the workings of the county and as such, their importance can’t be undersold. As a county, we need good, responsible people to participate in the process. Many times, people complain, but they don’t want to get any real “skin in the game.” This is where each of us can make a difference. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us via email or give us a call at (254) 697-7000.

The Milam County Sheriff’s Department is continuing their Brown Santa Efforts. Donations are still being taken for this wonderful program. As we move forward, please consider making a donation of a new toy or cash to the Brown Santa Program and help the Sheriff’s office give kids the Happy Christmas they all deserve.

As we move through this holiday period, our challenge to shop locally is still very active. In the next few weeks there will still be a few “Sip and Shop” events in the county for you to attend. The Nurse and I have been making great strides in finishing up our Christmas shopping and besides a few specialty items (autographed collectables and such) we have been making stops at all the Milam County stores and gathering all the presents we need; and with eight kids, four in-laws, two grandkids and multiple friends and relatives, we are doing A LOT OF SHOPPING!! So please, shop locally and help everyone in Milam County have a Very Merry Christmas.

In closing this week, our hope is that from our family to yours, each of you enjoy this time of year and help others to do the same.
