Quick Response Service Vehicle

The necessary paperwork has now been completed to implement the new quick response vehicle for medical emergencies. The new service should be available by mid-August and is intended to relief some of the pressure from our ambulance service.  The idea is to dispatch the vehicle in circumstances where an ambulance may not be needed, thus keeping our ambulance available for their intended usage.

The new service is being provided by a $180,000 donation by the solar farms coming to the County and by Texas Country Title. The vehicle is equipped with the necessary equipment for medical emergencies and it will be operated by a paramedic.

Emergency Services District

Last week the Milam County Commissioners Court accepted a petition to take the initial steps to create an emergency services district in Milam County for ground and air ambulance services in the County.

A public hearing will be held at the Milam County Courthouse at 10 a.m. on Aug. 8, 2022, where any interested person may briefly speak regarding the matter.

If the Court decides to go forward with the matter, the issue will be placed on the November ballot for the voters of Milam County to decide.  If approved the district would have authority to levy a tax not to exceed .10 per $100 of property evaluation to pay for better ground and air ambulance service.

Presently, Milam County government, the City of Rockdale and the City of Cameron pay an annual $350,000 subsidy to AMR to provide three ground ambulances in the County that operate 24/7.  However, a fourth ambulance is often needed which is estimated to cost from $350,000 - $500,000 per year.

In addition Milam County government pays about $60,000 annually to provide free air ambulance service in the county. If created, the new ESD would pay these subsidies.
