JUDGE: Happenings around Milam County

School Starting – Every year about this time school starts up and it seems like it comes earlier and earlier. Some of the schools in Milam County are starting this week with the rest kicking off next week. Somehow, it sure seems like we used to have all of August to relax before school kicked off for the year. So, as you’re going about your business over the next few weeks, remember, school is back in session so there will be more traffic in town, buses on the roads, and children walking to and from school. Be safe out there.

On a side note, this school year is a little surreal in our house. This is the last year that we will be attending a Meet the Teachers event with one of our children. After 27 straight years of Meet the Teachers events, our youngest is a senior now.  So, as the year goes by, there will be a lot of “last times” for us in the Whitmire household.

Burn Ban & Fire Warning – Milam County is still under a Burn Ban here as are all of our neighbors. Milam, Falls, Bell, and Robertson are all in the Increased Fire Danger Area as designated by the National Weather Service. Milam County has had a few smaller fires and our fire departments are doing a great job handling them. Let’s continue to help them out and abide by the Burn Ban.

Jury Summons – Serving on a jury is one of our utmost duties as an American and is paramount to ensuring the right to a fair trial. As Americans, we celebrate our rights and our freedoms; however, those rights and freedoms are only secured by our participation in the process. I understand that jury duty might be inconvenient and ill-timed on occasion, but it is part of the process that ensures every American their right to a fair trial.

Court Attire – if you have a court appearance, please dress accordingly. Each courtroom has a dress code and if you are to appear in a Milam County Courtroom, you will be expected to appear in the appropriate courtroom. Dress codes for the courtrooms can be found on the milamcounty.net website. This might seem a little old-fashioned, but dressing appropriately can make the difference in a situation. Remember, you only have one chance to make a first impression.

Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District (POSGCD) – One issue that comes up weekly if not daily is water supply. Not just here in Milam County, but in Texas as a whole. Growth in the state has put water at a premium. The POSGCD is the regulatory agency for Milam and Burleson Counties. Their website can be found at posgcd.org and is full of information about the aquifers and the area.

They have monthly meetings which are open to the public. The dates and times can be found on their calendar. This year the annual summit will be held all-day Thursday, August 17, at the Caldwell Civic Center in Caldwell, Texas. A full list of contents can be found on their website. If you have any interest or any questions on the way Groundwater is managed here in Milam County, then I encourage you to come out and attend this summit.

Lastly, I hope everyone has a great week and I wish all the luck to the children, educators, and all of the support staff who are starting school.
