Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms out there. I hope Sunday is a perfect day and families can get together to honor our wonderful Moms. You might even get flowers, candy or something else, but those hugs and kisses are the very best.

On the evening of April 29, 2025, the Thorndale High School Shattered Dreams participating students gathered at the Thorndale Fireman’s hall to have their mock drinking party, then went to Baylor Scott & White Hospital, Taylor for a mock trauma scene with their fellow participating classmates. While we were at the hospital Gay Kurtz and her team of volunteers worked on Jayden Gonzales, who was brought in by Allegiance ambulance/ PHI Air Medical helicopter (no actual helicopter was available at this time) with injuries to her face and many internal injuries. Jayden’s mom, Amanda Powers was requested at the hospital where she was told due to Jayden’s severe injuries she would not live. On scene our THS principal Tandy Betak was in attendance to console Mrs. Powers of this terrible news. We then shared the devastating news with our students who were in the waiting room; that their dear friend Jayden had passed away. We concluded our time at the hospital and returned to Thorndale. The parents of all of the participating students met at the Fireman’s hall to reunite with their child and have a meal brought in by all of the parents and visit about their experiences so far that day. Once the meal was finished, Community member Joey Quebe shared the story of his brother Jeremy Quebe who was a sophomore in high school that passed away 29 years ago on April 20, 1996 due to a drinking and driving accident. He also shared the impact it had on his family emotionally.
