Yoemen fall in heartbreaker to Academy

The Cameron Yoemen basketball team got a win and heartbreaking loss over the last week to move to 9-2 in district play heading into the last weeks of the season.

They headed out to Caldwell to take on the Hornets on Saturday, Feb. 5. They came out with the victory over Caldwell 80-74. 

The Yoemen then hosted the Academy Bumblebees on Tuesday. They lost to Academy in an 82-73 heartbreaker. 

The first quarter started very tight as neither team could get an edge. Academy eventually pulled away a tad and gained a 15-10 lead on Cameron. The Yoemen soon responded with a floater by Pharrell Hemphill (4) for a 18-14 deficit. The first quarter ended with Cameron trailing Academy 23-18.

Cameron started the second quarter with a big three-pointer by Nolan Brashear (2) to shorten their deficit to 23-21. The deficit for the Yoemen went down to one point with a successful three-point play by Hemphill for a 27-26 game. The Yoemen would take the lead on a fastbreak layup by Phaibian Bynaum (5) and a three pointer by Braylan Drake (15). Cameron then added to the lead with a layup by Charlie Mayer (22) for a score of 35-30. The Yoemen went into halftime 37-30.

The Bumblebees started the third quarter strong and tied the score at 37. Cameron responded with a layup by Hemphill for a 39-37 lead. The Yoemen continued to stay ahead and scored on a fastbreak layup by Javoun Goldsby (11) to make it a 45-40 lead. They continued to stay ahead with a floater by Kason Goolsby (1) making the Yoemen lead 50-45, which was followed with a three pointer by Goldsby for a 53-47 lead. The third quarter ended with Cameron ahead of Academy 57-56. 

Cameron began to crumble in the fourth quarter as the Yoemen found themselves trailing 65-61. Cameron came back to make the score 71-66 and tried to stay alive with a late three pointer by Goldsby for a 75-69 game, but it would not be enough as Cameron would fall to the Bumblebees 82-73. 

The Yoemen plan to redeem themselves on Friday as they play their final game of the year, hosting the Florence Buffaloes. It will also be senior night for Nolan Brashear, Phaibian Bynaum, Javoun Goldsby, and Tate Stroud. Tip-off is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
