Lady Yoe move to 3-0 in district play

The Cameron Lady Yoe softball team got two big wins over Rockdale and Rogers last week.

They traveled to Rockdale and thumped the Lady Tigers on Wednesday, March 9, 20-1 in a game that lasted five innings due to the 10-run rule being enforced.

The Lady Yoe opened up the scoring in the first and second inning, scoring seven total runs. Fielding errors by Rockdale assisted in all three of the runs for Cameron in the first inning, and an error followed by three straight singles allowed the Lady Yoe to score four runs in the second.

“We hit the ball hard and forced them into some plays,” Coach Chris Summerfield said. “We base ran pretty aggressively that forced them into some errors too. We felt real confident at the plate.”

The Lady Yoe continued with their explosive offense and scored seven more runs in the third inning. The offensive barrage by Cameron was led by Delanie Evans, Navaeh Billingsley, Ka’Sara Brooks, Kenzie Lara, and Lindsay Talafuse, who all drove in runs.

The Lady Yoe totaled 14 hits. Zayda Spillers, Lindsay Talafuse, Mia Wimmer, and Lauren Harris all managed multiple hits for the Lady Yoe.

Wimmer, Talafuse, and Spillers each managed three hits to lead the Lady Yoe. They also stole nine bases during the game as two players stole more than one.

Talafuse led the way with two. Cameron defeated Rockdale 20-1 on Wednesday thanks in part to Lindsay Talafuse, who assisted the offense and drove in four runners. Talafuse drove in runs on a single in the third and a single in the fifth. Zayda Spillers got the win for the Lady Yoe with a solid pitching performance. Spillers lasted five innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out eight and walking one.

“She was sharp,” Summerfield said. “She was hitting her spots. Her pitches were moving, so it kept them guessing where the ball was going to be.”

Up next, Cameron went on the road to take on the Rogers Lady Eagles on Friday.

“We’re just going to have to play the game the right way,” Summerfield said. “We’re going to have to make routine plays, make them beat us and not beat ourselves. They are a quality program that wins a lot. It’s not going to be easy, and we got to be committed to doing things the right way.”

The Lady Yoe was able to come out on top against Rogers, winning 12-3. The Lady Eagles took the lead early in the first inning with an RBI single for a 1-0 lead.  Cameron then pulled away with five runs in the second inning. In the second, Talafuse singled on a ground ball past the shortstop, driving in one run, Frausto singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs, and Camryn Ward singled on an infield hit to the pitcher, scoring another run. The Lady Yoe added to their lead with two runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to make it a 10-1 lead.

The Lady Yoe scored another two runs in the top of the seventh. Cameron scored when Camryn Ward singled on a groundball to the shortstop, scoring one run and Zayda Spillers drew a bases loaded walk, scoring the other run. Rogers answered with two of their own. The Lady Eagles answered with a single to left field, scoring two runs, but it would not be enough as the Lady Yoe secured the 12-3 victory.

The Lady Yoe totaled 15 hits in the game. Talafuse, Lauren Harris, Ward, and Mia Wimmer each had multiple hits for Cameron. Harris and Talafuse each collected three hits to lead the team. Spillers got the win for Cameron. Spillers lasted all seven innings, allowing 15 hits and three runs while striking out two.

The Lady Yoe then extended their district record to 3-0 as they defeated the Caldwell Lady Hornets at home 13-8 on Monday. Their overall record now sits at 15-4.
