John Edward Lewin
MAY 25, 1944- MARCH 6, 2026
John Edward Lewin, 81, of Cameron, Texas, passed away on March 6, 2026, at Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas.
Born on May 25, 1944, in Oneida, New York, to Thomas and Evelyn Lewin, John was a man defined by his strong work ethic and hands-on skills. He spent much of his life in construction and operating heavy machinery, a career that perfectly suited his industrious nature.
John married his high school sweetheart, Carol, in Vernon, New York. In 1972, the family moved to Texas, where they built a life together spanning 61 beautiful years. He enjoyed golf and camping for many years. He lived for friendly competition, sharing countless laughs over games of horseshoes and darts with family and friends.
A true “character,” John was known for his playful spirit. He was constantly picking on his loved ones and challenging every person he met to a legendary, strong handshake- a gesture that , as his family says, ‘if you know, you know.” He was a constant tinkerer who could always be found in his garage working on a project. Even in his final days, his humor remained intact; hospital staff fondly joked about having to keep a close eye on their ‘escape artist,” who kept everyone on their toes.
Beyond his playful exterior, John had a deep kindness, especially for animals, and spent his life rescuing and caring for many pets. Above all, his greatest joy was his family. He cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
John is survived by his two daughters, Paula Vaculin and husband Alan, and Pamela Green. He leaves behind a legacy through his six grandchildren: Robbie, Lacey, Will, Michael, Jason, and Amanda; and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Claude Lewin of Vernon, NY, and his sister, Esther Duerr of Taberg, NY.
A funeral service was held on March 14 at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron, Texas. Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
