BERTIE RAY SHUEMATE JUNE 9, 1943 – NOV. 20, 2025
Cameron Yoe lost its biggest supporter & Tracy Gurley Goode lost the best uncle ever with the passing of Bertie Ray Shuemate November 20th in Waco at the age of 82.
Bertie’s life was centered around service to others. He served his country in the National Guard, and he served as the masterful voice announcing Yoemen football games and various other sporting events for over a half a century, much of that time, aided by his great friend and spotter, Mike Crouch. If there was a high school sports announcer Hall of Fame, Bertie would be in it.
He was also not above using his position to benefit his Yoemen occasionally announcing a 1st down before the official did or warning of a coming reverse!
Bertie enjoyed bringing smiles to faces while calling bingo games at the VFW for 40 years. He also enjoyed music, animals, travel with family and friends and his beloved Yoemen. If you knew Bertie, you liked Bertie. He was a Christian and always a genuine, caring person who gave much more than he ever received. He was an All-District football player and a 1961 graduate of Yoe High School. He and his brother Max created a lasting legacy of giving back to their alma mater for their entire adult lives. Cameron recognized this legacy by naming the press box after Bertie in 2021.
Bertie was born June 9, 1943, in Cameron, TX and was preceded in death by his parents James Shuemate & Mary Opal Presley, Brothers JT, Donald, Max, Reverend Roger and Coney Shuemate as well as a niece, Liz Shuemate, great niece, Zowie Trevino & sister-in-law, Sue Shuemate.
He is survived by: Sister, Violet Gill Niece, Tracy Gurley, husband Mark Goode of Robinson, TX Niece, LaDusta Teal, husband Abraham Trevino and family of Troy, TX Niece, Jennifer Shuemate, husband Terry Douglas and family of St. Francisville, LA Nephew, Kenny Teal of Cameron, TX
Great Niece, Kristen (Mathis), husband Cody Saulters of Speegleville, TX Great Niece, Ashley (Goode), husband Patrick Brooks of Robinson, TX Great Niece, Kaitlyn Goode, fiancé Bennitt Richardson of Hewitt, TX Funeral services will be held at the First Methodist Church in Cameron Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m. and visitation one hour before in the fellowship hall. A Memorial Service for June 2026 is currently in the works.
Many thanks to the entire Cameron Community and Yoe Nation for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support during the hard times Bertie has fallen upon in recent years. A very special thank you for the tireless efforts and exceptional support Mike Crouch and friends have provided during this difficult time. You ALL have helped “end an era” a bit easier and we will forever be grateful.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home to cover funeral expenses.
