Rhoades among four finalists for Temple job

Temple ISD has announced publicly the four finalists for their head football coach and athletic director position - Cameron Yoe HC/AD Rick Rhoades, Galena Park North Shore HC Jon Kay, current Temple defensive coordinator Scott Stewart, and current Temple assistant head coach/strength and conditioning coordinator JD Berna.

The Temple job came open on Jan. 14 when former head coach Mike Spradlin announced that he would be stepping down from the head-coaching role. He has joined Magnolia ISD as the athletic director and will no longer serve as a head football coach.
Back in 2011, Rhoades was a finalist for the job along with Spradlin. He has served as the Yoemen athletic director and head football coach since the 2009 football season and has played in the state championship game five out of his seven seasons, winning back-to-back-to-back state championships from 2012 to 2014.
Stewart, the current defensive coordinator, has been on the staff for two years. Before joining Temple, the Wildcats had give up 35 points a game in the 2013 season. Stewart has been able to improve that to 25 points a game in 2014 and 16 points a game for the 2015 season.
Berna has been with Spradlin for a good portion of his career, including his years at The University of Houston, Abilene Cooper, and most recently at Temple. Neither of the two assistants have head coaching experience at the high school level.
Kay has spent over 15 years at North Shore ISD and won this year’s 6A DI state championship game over Austin Westlake, 21-14. Kay has held a variety of different positions at North Shore, but was most recently the defensive coordinator before taking on the head-coaching role, starting with the 2014 season.
All four finalists will return the Temple on Wednesday for another round of interviews. A lone finalist is expected to be named on Monday, Feb. 8.
