COVID UPDATE: County records tenth death due to virus

Milam County has reported another death due to COVID-19.

Milam County Judge Steve Young reported on Thrusday night that the county recorded its tenth death due to the virus.

"I am saddened to report another death of a Milam County resident due to COVID," he said. "This brings our death toll to ten. In addition, we have a record 34 new positive cases to report;16 PCR cases and 18 antigen (probable) cases. This brings us to another record 130 active cases in Milam County, which is 10 more than our prior record of 120, set just last week!"

Young said that 46 individuals were tested in Cameron on Thursday with 19 positive results.

"In the last 19 days of testing, we have tested 701 individuals in Milam County with 187 positive results with a positivity rate of 27 percent," he said. "Further, three more individuals were admitted to local hospitals today and one person is still on a ventilator."

Testing is set at the Buckholts VFD from 8 a.m. to noon today.  If you are a Milam County resident with COVID symptoms the county will provide a free COVID antigen test.

"Thanks to our great team of testers who are putting their lives on the line so we can provide testing," Young said. "A special thanks to your fine County Commissioners, the Mayors and City Council members of each city of the county for cooperating to pool their resources to provide this much needed testing program."

He said Milam County is prepared to administer the vaccine to any Milam County resident, free of charge, as soon as the county gets it.

"The state will provide the vaccine to the county and we will administer the vaccine to any Milam County resident," he said. "In fact, we have already partnered with Texas A&M Health Science to help administer the vaccine. We want everyone to get vaccinated to stop the destruction this virus is causing."
