Commissioners proclaim Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week

Milam County Commissioners approved several proclamations and heard an update from Judge Steve Young on the progress of construction on the urgent care center during a meeting Sept. 14.

“Professional building renovations have begun,” Young said. “We started asbestos abatement last week. We are getting that cleaned up and as soon as they get done they will begin actual construction on the building.”

Young said the county is making good progress on the project.

“We have applied for a lot of grants to help fund this,” he said. “One of which is to renovate the annex. We cleared the first hurdle on that one and we are moving forward with that process.”

He said the county has also been given the green light to move forward with a  $1.7 million grant to have the county mapped for a flood plan.

“We missed a solar project that could have come if we had a flood plan map,” he said. “So we are getting that done.”

County Commissioners proclaimed Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week and set Sept. 22 as National Voter Registration Day.

Young said that rapid COVID-19 testing continues in the county on a rotating basis.

“Milam County with the assistance of the mayors have implementing a free COVID testing program,” he said. “We are using the money from the federal government to do that. We are the only rural county that has been able to do that.”

He said the county has done 120 tests over the eight days of testing and that 10 of those tests came back positive. The testing will continue through Dec. 31.

“It is important to those who have symptoms,” he said. “It is important to get those people out of the public and it helps to get those that have had contact with them out of circulation.”

“Friday was great day for us as we had no new cases,” he said. “We also tested in Buckholts that day and there were no positive tests that day. We have had schools back in for four weeks now and we have had a few cases, but not that many. I was talking the Superintendent Sprinkles on Friday night at the game and he had several emails from students thanking them for letting them go back to school.”

Young also presented a video to the court that featured Sheriff’s Deputy Randy Rodriguez about his experience fighting COVID-19 earlier this year. The video can be viewed here: https://www.steveyoungphotography.info/Milam-County/Milam-County-2020/He...
