Lady Yoe go 3-1 in Cameron tournament

The Cameron Lady Yoe basketball team hosted the first tournament of the year at Yoe Gym last week.  The ladies posted a strong showing, picking up wins over Milano, Riesel and Bartlett, before falling to Thorndale in the finale to finish with a 3-1 mark.

“The tournament was good for our team to get in the win column and gain some confidence,” said Lady Yoe head coach Corey Cunningham.  “This was important for us after beginning the season with two tough teams.  Through most of the tournament we played strong defense which helped create transition offense.  The final game of the tournament against Thorndale exposed some areas that we need to continue to work on.”

On day one, Cameron opened play with a big 65-30 win over Milano.  Terryn Adams led all scorers with 20 points.  NaQuiria Gibbons (19) and Qua Workman (11) were both in double figures.

Cameron overwhelmed the Lady Eagles most of the evening, converting many transition baskets off of 20 turnovers.  Lauryn Leftwich had six offensive rebounds while Workman posted six defensive boards.

Cameron had an equal amount of success in their next two wins over Riesel (55-24) and Bartlett (53-7).

Balanced scoring was beneficial to Cameron throughout the tournament.  In the win over Riesel, all eight players on the roster recorded points scored.

“It was encouraging to see so many players in the scoring column and for the points to be spread around,” said Cunningham.  “This will be helpful going forward if multiple players are a threat to score and it will take the scoring burden off any one player.”

Though this tournament was not set up in bracket format, both Cameron and Thorndale entered the final game at 3-0.

Cameron turnovers played a big part in the first period as the Lady Bulldogs took a 19-12 lead.  The Thorndale pace was slowed in the second, but Marley Spink’s free throw and one field goal were the only points recorded for Cameron in the period.  Thorndale held the advantage at the half, 30-15.

Thorndale extended their lead in the third and coasted to the 55-33 final.  Peyton Anastas scored 16 points through three quarters for the Lady Dogs.  Elise Biar and Kylie Buchanan each had 11 points.

The Lady Yoe have no scheduled games this week, and will return to action on November 29 when Riesel comes back to Yoe Gym.

“As we continue non-district action we want each game to make us better,” said Cunningham.  “This includes learning from our mistakes and trying to correct them.  It also means taking what we did well and trying to improve upon those things.  I want to see the team grow more and more familiar with each other and the system we run.”
