Thorndale Ex-Student News

Things have slowed down considerably here at my home after last weekend’s shock. My sister and family flew back to Ohio on Monday. Made a bit of a problem at the airport for them. Wrapped up a couple of Amish cakes real good and stuck them in my sister’s luggage. Well, you probably know what happened. I guess they thought it was a couple of bombs or even worse. Nephew offered them a piece of cake after they got them open. They didn’t think it was funny. Sure miss this house full of people. They got home just fine, though.

Forged in Steel, Fueled by Oak: BBQ the Thorndale Way

Texas is known for beef and BBQ, and whether it’s grilling steaks in the backyard or cooking thousands of pounds of beef over hot coals for the local church fundraiser, a high percentage of Texans have at least tried their hand at smoking meats, if not perfected it. While perfection is elusive for most, it can be a hobby or a full-time profession. BBQ can be a contentious topic both within the confines of the state and across the country. Yet few things bring so many people together— around the table, around the flames. As Anthony Bourdain famously stated, it’s a great start toward world peace. In my business, we cater a diverse menu at many weddings— up to six or seven a week— and 75% or more want smoked brisket on their special day. BBQ leads the charge.

Thorndale Ex-Students News

Well, I had the surprise and shock of my life this past weekend! I passed another one of those pesky birthdays and really had a surprise. My dear sister, Betty Kay Reavis Morlan, Class of 1959, of Pataskala, Ohio, along with her son and his wife and her grandson and his wife, came in late Friday. My dear son, Jeff Olbrich, Class of 1981, of Pflugerville and Thorndale, told us we would all go over to Julio’s in Rockdale for a late lunch on Saturday.
